HD 5770 support ends with High Sierra. Mojave and Catalina don’t have drivers for it and it’s not possible to install the High Sierra ones.

A Mac Pro that had the GPU upgraded and Mojave installed, when back using a HD 5770 the display still works via the native EFI support of the GPU, but it’s useful only for diagnostics - it’s completely unaccelerated and impossible to work with it.

Read the first post of the stickie thread below, I bet that most if not all your doubts are answered there already, including your GPU question.

Would a GeForce GTX 650 Ti be any good?
Seems to be support metal.
Found on for 80 bucks?

650Ti, if it's a real one with a GK106-220-A1, is a Kepler Generation GPU and NVIDIA web drivers supports it only up to 10.13.6 while Apple has it's own drivers that extend support to Mojave and Catalina.

750Ti is a Maxwell one and supports ends with 10.13.6. Apple don't support Maxwell GPUs since no Mac ever had one.
