I have my handy dandy MP 5,1 and would like very much to not have to upgrade to a newer machine if possible because I enjoy how powerful and versatile this one is. What I would LIKE to do is have a machine that triple boots MacOS, Windows 10 or 11, and Linux but without the use of Open core.

Machine specs:
Mac Pro 5,1
12 core 2.66GHz Xeon
40GB 1333 RAM
AMD Radeon Sapphire HD 7950 3GB GPU
USB 3.0 PCI card
Standard optical drive included with Mac
Combo Blu-ray/HD/DVD drive in secondary bay
500GB NVME SSD(MacOS Mojave installation)
500GB SSD (ubuntu installation)

Currently this machine is running: MacOs Mojave 10.14.6 and Ubuntu 22.04.

I've checked the Mac Pro5,1 threads and maybe I'm missing how to do it, 've also checked YouTube and tried installations that way without success. I also don't want to use Parallels/VMWare Fusion/Virtualbox because I would like all the system resources available to the OS when running.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this!

Do you plan to continue to use Mojave ? This is the last OS to natively run on the 5,1. Otherwise I believe you have to use Open core.

That is a great question. Yes I do plan to continue using Mojave. I’m not really a fan of “hacking things” in general and I usually don’t like the results. Once Mojave is unusable I’ll rely on Ubuntu.

I guess I’m confused as to how to install windows on my machine and assumed I would have to use opencore to do so.

Hi,
For triple boots have a look for rEFInd
(How do you curently manage your dual boot ? Native apple disk pick up choice at start up I guess ?)

Windows install : to avoid problems, install from a dvd the old way no efi (certificates problem when efi install if I am not wrong)

You do not need open core to install windows. There are a ton of threads on the forum on installing windows on a 5,1. Last time I did dual boot with windows was way back on a 17inch iMac. I am not up to date on current exact procedures on a 5,1.

Edit: I used Bootcamp and windows XP

I installed Ubuntu through USB onto the SSD basically using disk utility first and then using Ubuntu's software to further format and then install. I tried installing Windows the same way but that did not work and bootcamp doesn't work either. I tried editing the application to make my computer be supported but that also did not work.

I am not in any way experienced with Windows installs on Mac hardware, but I've read many postings here that recommend that you have a good backup of your boot rom before starting down that path. Do a search for romtool made by @Macschrauber. I believe that if you use the manual OpenCore method you can activate an emulated bootrom feature of OpenCore that will also protect your bootrom from corruption or being overrun.
