Hi I'm hoping to get to Big Sur on my 2009 Mac Pro 5,1. I'm currently running Catalina which works well but both adobe and Microsoft products require later IOS to run update. The question is I think a patch has already been downloaded SMC 1.39F5 and I'm wanting to download the OpenCore software to get to Big Sur do I have to remove the SMC 1.39F5 first? TIA Nigel

You need to read some basics first. Smc firmware is the least you want to remove, this would give a complete brick. Ntl there is no tool nor files for it.

Thanks for the heads up! How do I find out what patch was used to get to Catalina? Was a patch needed to get to Catalina? If there was do I need to remove it before installing OpenCore?

You can run the tool in my signature.

First, it makes sence to check the firmware and included NVRAM.
Second, it shows the bootvars, if pointing to a bootloader.
Third, it shows OpenCore variables and eventually spoofed firmware and real version (something of it in the log file)

Last but not least everyone should have a firmware backup in case something runs mad. 4.1 crossflashes are not the most stable Mac Pros when it comes to NVRAM health.
