KernelPanics when waking from sleep can have multiple causes.

The most common one is the Real Time Clock being stuck, so, the first step is to check the BR2032 RTC battery voltage with a voltmeter and replace it whenever is below 3.0V. Always replace the BR2032 with another BR2032, while CR2032C will also fit, the chemistry is not appropriated for the high temperature of the GPU area and you will have to replace the battery frequently.

Another common cause for the KPs is the Northbridge heatsink push pins being broken, also check that.

If you checked and eliminated both, then it's time to run AHT/ASD and see what errors it will show.

Btw, wake from sleep KPs have absolutely nothing to do with the firmware upgrade. It's a RTC/SMC/SMI problem, not a firmware one.
