Mac Pro 5.1 Graphics Card Issue

Hey guys,

So I have a Mac Pro 5.1 which I was preparing to sell and was working perfectly fine a few months ago. I boot up the computer now and it won't display anything. It seems like the 5870 I installed in it is giving some issues. I have reason to believe that it could be a faulty connector cable and not the whole graphics card. So here's my question,

1) What are the black connector cables called (the one that links the card to the motherboard)? Is it possible to buy them separately?

2) If not, what are some cheap cards I could pop into this machine that works straight off and best place to buy them from? I searched eBay and found refurbished cards for the Mac Pro. Are these safe to buy?

Search eBay for “Mac Pro PCIe cable” and you’ll see those for $5 or so.

As for used cards on eBay, it just depends on the dealer. A GT120 should be a cheap option and it doesn’t require a power cable at all. It certainly lacks for performance when compared to a 5870 though.

"Apple Mac Pro or G5 mini pci-e 6pin to pci-e 6pin video card power cable" is a good search, i get them from amazon.

a used GTX680 is easy to flash with a mac bios as an option (and super cheep to buy) or something like a GTX670/660 will work with little problems (but no mac bios)
i still use a PC GTX660 in my old macpro a EVGA branded one

Got it! I wouldn't mind doing it for my own usage. But, the person I'm selling it to won't be interested in a flashed card. In fact, they are insisting on a 5770 or 5870.
