Recently pulled out my 5,1 to mess around with and I’m currently having an issue with booting ANY OSes.

The only thing I can think of being different is the SATA SSD which is a 4TB Samsung 870 Evo formatted in APFS. The other change I’ve made is adding EnableGop.ffs to my bootrom, but I don’t see why that would interfere.

Whether I’m using OC or the regular apple boot picker, I end up at a prohibited sign every other boot. “Waiting for root device” usually.

I’ve reset the PRAM numerous times, wiped the SATA SSD with Mac and Windows devices. First Aid found nothing either. Just leads me to believe this drive is either disagreeing with the Mac Pro or APFS.

As @Macschrauber linked above, 870 drives are problematic, unless just used for data. Avoid them.
Yeah it’s unfortunate, I ordered an NVME Sabrent Rocket 4 so should be smooth sailing now.
Maybe it works in a PCIe Card with Sata Controller
Possibly but with 6 SATA slots I feel like it would be a waste of a PCIE slot(I already got 3 used). I am curious though.
