Mac Pro 5,1 - Odd Finder graphical glitch

I have a Mac Pro 5,1 with a MacVidCards GTX 970 installed, connected to a 27" Apple Cinema Display. I've been running El Capitan for the last few years with no problems, recently decided to try wiping it and installing High Sierra.

I installed 10.13.6, along with the latest nVidia web driver (387.10.10.10.40.105) and CUDA driver (396.148). Everything seems to work okay, except in Finder from time to time I see a black rectangle, usually on top of a filename, but sometimes on top of other text (like creation date in the preview pane). It seems kind of random when and where it shows up, and also seems to happen more frequently if there are a lot of files being displayed, and if I'm resizing the window.

When I try to screen cap it, the black rectangle doesn't show up in the screen shot, so here's a photo of the monitor itself showing what happens.

Has anyone else ever encountered this?

Did you use the monitor's native colour space?

I've used both the monitor's native space, and the calibrated profile from my X-Rite i1Display. The black rectangles show up in both situations.

I have that black rectangle on Finder with eVGA GTX680 for Mac and native driver since High Sierra Betas, more people has it too.

I'm seeing the same problem. Mostly Finder, but sometimes the menu bar too.

4,1 -> 5,1
Asus GTX 970 (no Mac EFI from Macvidcards)
10.13.5
NVidia 387.10.10.10.35.106
CUDA 396.64

No real solution I've found, though I haven't dug very far...
 
Try Enable "reduce transparency", this setting able to fix some colour bug few months ago. Not sure if this can help on this black box bug.

Also seeing this occasionally with an MVC 750 Ti in 10.13.6 with the latest NVIDIA web drivers.
 
Don't know if this relates to you.. I have a 2015 MacPro, with the D300 graphic cards.. My 4K monitor started blipping out, 1/2 second at first.. Evently the LK monitor died.. I bought a new 4k LG monitor, The display started blipping, eventually became worse. I returned it to B&H Photo for a replacement unit. Same thing, after two weeks, I started getting the 4K monitor to blip off for 1/2 second. I looked on Mac Rumors site and read there was an issue with the Thunderbolt lanes and 4K monitors, HDMI also is a thunderbolt lane.. It would start with some issue on display card, a wait state, or loop, then a 'kernel process' would climb up to 1000%. Computer would come to a standstill for minutes, sometimes eventually the task would lower % rate, and computer ok again. other times computer froze kernel panic.. Audio would play, but everything else was dead.

Apple store did a few tests, determined like Mac Rumors said, it is an issue with graphic cards.. I'm taking it in, this week to replace cards.. I cannot find the original 240 gig SSD. I put an OWC 1 TB in.. Apple told me, the repair company, may and DOES have the right to refuse to service it. Since I cannot find my 240 gig SSD.. My only solution is to buy a new computer. AS TOLD TO ME BY APPLE itself. They put notes in my case, and said if problem existed only in graphics card, and not logic boards, they may play nice, and replace it.. I'm going with the optimistic viewpoint for now.
 
Happens to me also, with flashed 680GTX, with or without web drivers, using a 4K Dell monitor. Have gotten used to it, strangely
 
Has every flashed GTX680 this problem? Would be one more argument for people getting a AMD R9 280X
 
Would see this occasionally with previous NVIDIA drivers, but have not yet seen with GTX 1080 and the latest 387.10.10.15.15.108 driver in 10.13.6.
 
I too am seeing these black rectangle Finder artifacts. Just upgrade to an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 Mac card from my ATI Radeon HD 4870. Perhaps these artifacts are a result of Metal? And although the GTX is a better card on paper, it seems slightly slower than the Radeon.
 
i get that sometimes on my gtx 770 osx 10.12 native and nvidia driver on the menu bar, never gave a problem just flashes black for a few secs then back to normal.
all it dose it make me glance at the top right of my screen once in a while

I was so happy with El Capitan, but the support has gone. So i have updated to High Sierra.

And now: AHHHHH, black flashing menu bar, black bars over names. I HATE High Sierra.

Any fixes or workarounds?

Problem with Titan X and with 680 GTX Mac Edition too.

You may try

1) Disable SIP

2) Disable Gatekeeper

3) run the following code in terminal (internet connection required)

This steps will force install the old V378 driver for High Sierra. The performance is not as good as the current V387 driver, but less buggy.

Are these glitches in Sierra too? If not i fall back to El Capitan and update to Sierra.

When you set "Icon size" to Big in all windows you get you get a lot less glitches on filenames

take effect after closing window and reopen

After install my backup I get the same glitches under El Capitan. The only change was the Mac Pro Firmware update form the old MP51.007F.803 to the new 140.0.0.0. Looks like the Problem is between the Nvidia Web drivers and the new MacPro Firmware.
