Does anyone what a power supply replacement on a 5,1 Mac Pro would cost at the Apple Store? I'm having the intermittent unable-to-power-up thing happening. Powers up on third or fourth click. Talked to Apple Support on the phone but they of course woudln't give me a quote or even a rough estimate over the phone. Trying to figure out of it's worth lugging this thing in to the Apple Store or just replacement it myself. The replacement part is $250-$300 new and about $130 for used pulls on eBay.

Apple Store would have charged me $170 for new PS and $80 labor to replace it. This would have included 90 day warranty. They ended up replacing the back plane board instead, but it didn't resolve the issue and refunded the entirety of the repair bill, including labor.

If you replace it new yourself, it appears it will be more expensive and with no warranty whatsoever. I wouldn't recommend getting a used one unless it came with a limited warranty, but that's just me trying to protect myself.

Interesting, I think they just can't tell you how much to "fix your Mac", because they cannot confirm what's the problem. However, they should be allowed and able to tell you how much to replace the PSU. It's a fixed price.
