MP 1,1-5,1 Mac Pro 5,1 Raid NVME SSD Adapter vs two NVME drives on different PCI slots in raid

I have a Mac Pro 4,1 turned 5,1
The boot drive is a Samsung Evo NVME on an AngelBird adapter. I use the machine for photo editing, mostly Lightroom and Photoshop.
im wondering if I will benefit from a raid situation, and if so would it be better to get a multi ssd adapter like the squid or to get another single adapter and raid between two slots?

Also im wondering if there is any benefit to an X16 adapter?

any advice would be appreciated
 
If continuous drive speed transfer rate is your culprit at the moment, then you would need a PCIe adapter card with a switch in it. With that you would get continuous speed improvements. Raid is not an option for every situation, depending of your OS too. An AHCI is old days now, look at NVMe for future.

Please tell your machine specs a little bit more specifically, and the OS too, and I believe the photo experts will chime in.

You first might to want to make sure your culprit is not something else, like the lack of RAM for example.

that link was very informative, and I think that's not the problem im having, when I have some time Ill reinstall the OS or update to Catalina.
its hard to say what the problem is exactly, lightroom sometimes has hangups, and it stalls, its rare but it happens, sometimes the browser and finder freeze and I get the spinning ball.
but all of that is rare and could be a result of different stuff.

the system is a 4,1 that I've updated to a 5,1
has 2 x5680's and 48gigs of ram, has one of those dell reference RX580s with 8gigs of Vram but it shows up in the system as a RX480 for some reason.
Running Mojave.

Dell RX 580 is a RX 480 GPU (Polaris 10 XT) with modded firmware to show as RX 580 (Polaris 20 XTX), Dell did this knowingly. These Dell GPUs are a real source of trouble when installed in a MP5,1, since it uses more power from the PCIe slot than the spec.
 
Do you think that might be causing my issues ?
the things I do (Lightroom and Photoshop), as far as I know and can measure aren't GPU intensive

Maybe your SSD have little space available and have worn out cells. Install DriveDX and check your drive health first. Dell GPUs are know for making havoc with MP5,1, but troubleshoot simpler things first.
 
The SSD is pretty new, I have it less than a year, Its a 500 gig Samsung evo NVME installed through PCI.
but I do have only 60gigs available on it,
at some point this week ill clear it and do a clean install of Mojave.

I bet you have worn out cells and the SSD is taking to long to erase it when doing writes.

Don't use a PCIe SSD with less than 20 to 25% free space, you will overuse some cells and not use at all others, this kill SSDs. You need to have 20~25% free space for the garbage collection, TRIM and cell management algorithms spread out the writes evenly within all the NAND.

Only SLC, and some MLC, NAND tolerates un-evenly writes. Samsung EVOs are TLC.
