Hi,

My Mac Pro 5.1 won’t start up, it gets half way through on the startup bar but won’t go further.

I have tried 3 different startup drives and all the same results, all only get half way.

Reset pram but still no luck, will not start in safe mode either.

Pulled all drives and tried an old Snow Leopard original DVD but still no go.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Chris

Start with cmd-v held and make a photo of the screen how far it goes.

I vote for the gpu, but thats just a guess of course.

Thank you, this is the last part of the verbose screen.

Hi!

First off all. Strip down the cMP 5.1 to bare minimum. Take out the memory also. Just the minimum. Reinstall the old GPU. Then work your way up. This to see if it is a hardware problem.

visibly check the Northbridge rivets. You can see those 2 plastic hooks if you flashlight them between cpu Board and mounting plate. They tend to break.

if thats ok strip down the Mac as much as possible.

if you had screen sharing active you may try the Mac headless without GpU and login from another Mac.

if not try another GPU

GPU is a Mac Edition Quadro K5000
OS is non patched Mojave
2010 5.1 single 3.46
latest firmware 144.0.0.0.0
250GB, 500GB and 2TB Sata SSD.
Previously I had a similar problem like yours. I also have the Nvidia K5000, official Mac Edition graphic card and would freeze halfway and could not complete the boot in Mojave or High Sierra. it was definitely a problem with the K5000 GPU as I had a second 2010 Mac Pro, extra Nvidia 680gtx and 770gtx GPUs and did some testing. Both Mac Pros worked fine using different GPUs.

The K5000 GPU issue is now fixed by a weird situation. Out of the blue, I got another HD with Mavericks installed and tried out with the K5000. Pressing command + shift + V, by some miracle, the K5000 completed the boot and worked fine in Mavericks. Then switched to High Sierra or Mojave and the K5000 now works fine, boots normally.

Macsonic, thank you, thank you, and thank you!
Decided to try an old external HD that had a copy of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and to my surprise it booted up just fine. Then decided to do a fresh install of El Capitan on an internal SSD and again fine booted up from that as well. Went through the upgrades to Mojave and now all appears to be working normally.
Complete mystery as to what happened but so far all good again
