I picked up a 5,1 Mac Pro not too long ago for pretty cheap from a surplus auction at my college, and I can't get it to post or display any video output. I have tried to troubleshoot a bit online, but I've been coming up a bit empty. I'm not too familiar with Macs (especially desktops), so I might be a little lost. Here's the rundown:

-6 Core 3.33 GHz variant (not quite sure what year, my best guess is 2010)
-16GB RAM
-It came with only a Sapphire Pulse RX580, no original GPU
-Did not come with a drive

Troubleshooting:

-I haven't bought a drive for it yet, I figured I would wait to confirm it isn't a brick before sinking any extra money into it. I am totally not sure if this needs a drive in order to post.

-RX580 should be powered correctly. It came with only a 6 pin power connector when it requires 8, so I bought a dual mini 6 pin to 8 pin adapter (which seems to be working). I am not sure if the card has been modified or flashed at all, don't know how to check but I do have a Windows desktop I could potentially troubleshoot it in.

-Only the SYS PG, PSU PWROK, and 5V STBY lights come on when it's powered on and I push the DIAG LED button.

-It at least visually appears to want to work, RAM error lights work properly (from when I didn't have a stick fully seated at one point), CPU heatsink does get warm to the touch after being powered on for a little bit. Don't know if this is an indication of life or not.

That's about where I'm at with it at the moment. My gut is telling me that it has something to do with the GPU not talking to the rest of the computer, but that's just a wild guess to be honest. Appreciate all the help I can get!

Without EFI_DONE LED being lit when you press the DIAG button, you do not have a working Mac Pro, you have a brick.

Btw, without a proper AppleOEM GPU you will have an extremely tough ride to diagnose your Mac Pro…

Any advice on what I should do with it? Is there something I should try and replace to get it operational, or should I try and sell some of the working components to recoup some of my losses? Thanks for the response btw

If I was in your shoes, I'd look for the cheapest working Mac Pro locally and then debug yours. Buying what you need to diagnose piece meal will be more expensive.

Do you are sure that is really a mid-2010/mid-2012 and not an early-2009?
