Mac Pro 5.1 video card upgrade

I've got a Mac Pro 5.1 currently equipped with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB. I'm looking to upgrade my monitor to the LG 3UM95 34" which has a display of 3440 x1440 and my currently video card has a max resolution of 2560x1600.

Are there currently any video card upgrades that would allow me to use this monitor which runs on hdmi or thunderbolt 2?

I've been looking at this monitor today myself after seeing it in a different thread and it also has display port input, so you could use any modern card with a mini display port and a mini display port to display port 1.2 cable.

There won't be any video cards with Thunderbolt 2 outputs. As thefredelement states, Display Port and MiniDP are the way to go here and most modern cards support those.

The first post of the Nvidia FAQ is a good start for picking a MP compatible video card.

Personally I would get a GTX 680 if it is powerful enough for you and within your budget. The reason why I got that specific card is that it is trivially easy to flash for EFI boot screens.

If you want an "official" card, these would be your choices for an upgrade, but they all tend to be overpriced:

Sapphire 3GB 7950 Mac Edition
eVGA 2GB GTX 680 Mac Edition
Apple 5870

Have you actually tried with 5770?

If it is an Apple one the MDP is just as likely to run that display as 5870.

Many older cards can run 4K if they have DP or MDP, they are just frequently limited to 30 Hz.

Amazon says the monitor isn't out until the first week of June. An old co worker was telling me the card I have now 5770 has a max resolution of 2560x1600 so if I do end up with this monitor I want to benefit from its 3440 x1440.

AFAIK, the only cards that today can do above 2560x1600 AT 60 HZ, are the AMD 7xxx cards.

GTX680 is artificially knee-capped by Apple, as are it's GK1xx brethren.

If you don't mind 30Hz, anything with a DP will run your display fine.
