Geekbench 5 is the current benchmarks to compare against.
What is this inferring.....that an M1 is only a quarter as fast as a cMP..?
In single core, the M1 will pound anything, but not multicore.

Aren't these somewhat disingenuous or I misinterpreting the benchmark? The bench mark is on OpenCL, ie graphics cards. So ok, you throw in a modern graphics card into a 5,1, that's what's mostly being tested, vs Ian integrated graphics card on the M1. What about on the CPU side? I'd like to see a 12core 3.46Ghz (or whatever the top processor is) vs the M1 in the air.

I'm keeping my upgraded 5,1 until an equivalent of M1 Mac Pro is out.
More benchmark on the way, well here 2010 MacPro 5,1 SSD comparison to your M1 it’s nearly identical. M1 Air can do 2212.2 MB/s this MacPro 5,1 little bit faster on the hdd side.

this is an unfair comparison - apple hadn't said M1 = Mac Pro level. it only said M1 is powerful. Mac Pro 7,1 can change PCIe SSD card write and read speed can reach at 6,XXX Mb . plus why use an entry level CPU to compete with high end model ? this is completely useless
I think this post is relevant given the fact people are just about claiming the m1 air can be used for Hollywood special effects.
so funny. using modular component to compare a notebook, an entry notebook. come on, the advantage of M1 is so good for notebook cause of thermal limitation. however, Mac Pro 7,1 is no thermal issue so turns out it is based on what you need: intel CPUs are good at some area and M1 or M1x are good at other areas.
All first gen M1 machines are the absolute base models.
So any performance is very good when compared with what they replaced (I.e i3 intel).
As others have said, when the next level machines arrive, I.e. iMac etc there should be a larger leap.

Logic Performance?
Has anyone tried to run Logic yet on the new M1? I'd be interested how much more plugins it can handle. Since the Single Core speed is so high, there should be quit an improvement on single channels with lots of plugins I guess? Would love to hear your experience

you have a good point for mobile I would use the M1 for the battery life, now I can use my iPhone apps in my MacBook on the go and Mac Pro for heavy duty use. I guess that's how it is now, we can't have best of both worlds. Apple just need to put that RTX chip in their M1x.
