I'm considering upgrading my Mac Pro 5,1 to Sonoma or Sequoia. It's currently running dual X5690 processors and an RX 6600 XT graphics card. I've already replaced the network card, and other components aren't relevant to this upgrade.

I previously tried installing Ventura, but it failed to boot. It seems the issue is that my CPUs lack the AVX instruction set, which is required by the RX 6600 XT drivers for Ventura and later macOS versions. I'm considering replacing the RX 6600 XT with an RX 580/RX 590, but I'm worried about the high risk of getting a card that was used for mining, which could cause instability issues.

So, I'd like to know if the Radeon Pro WX 7100 professional graphics card is fully supported and will work properly in a Mac Pro 5,1 running Sonoma or Sequoia.

Thank you.

WX 7100 is the AMD Pro version of the RX 480, so, the answer is yes.

You shouldn't forget that the AVX2 related issues also happen with apps that since Ventura started to require it and when is an app requirement, you can't do nothing about it besides keeping an older version that does not have the AVX2 requirement or getting a newer Mac.

Thanks for confirming that and the heads-up about AVX2, I'll keep it in mind. This machine is mainly for text-based work, and it's been fantastic on Monterey so far. Really love this machine!
