Hi,

I'm actually running OS X Sierra 10.12.6 on a mid 2012 Mac Pro (5,1) with an RX 480 graphic card.
Is the upgrade to High Sierra a safe one?

I mean, I know that starting from 10.12. (& 10.13) these cards are natively supported by OS X, but what about the installation process (sice I have no boot screen). Is the card recognized when installing from an USB stick? Will I be able to install is smoothly or should I plan some hacking somewhere in the installation process?

Thanks in advances

Just run the HS installer inside 10.12.6 and wait. That’s it. I did my upgrade with the R9 380, also no boot screen, no problem at all. When you need to see the screen, you will see it. Why making USB etc to make things complicated?

Caesar_091,
You need a stock Apple card with bootscreen for the firmware update of High Sierra.
e.g. a GT 120 NVidia or a ATI 5770. Otherwise it won't work.

Nice catch, I completely missed that because I did the firmware upgrade when HS was still in beta.

When HS officially released, I just did the OS upgrade, that’s why I can do it with the R9 380. I totally forget about it!

I’m in the same boat.

Just swap in my 5770 for the installation and no need for hacking my kext?

Putting back a 120GT (since the 5870 was busy with a 1,1 Mac Pro) allowed me to run the firmware upgrade; however, before running the High Sierra installed I've turned the Mac Pro off, putted back the RX 480 and than I run the installer... all worked like a charm!

Posting from 10.13.1 right now ;)
