Afternoon,

I have a weird issue on my newly acquired Mac Pro 6,1. It will be working and then it freezes, time doesn't increase and I can't use any keyboard shortcuts... thought I can move the cursor around.

Eventually it crashes and restarts (though this can take more than an hour to finally crash).

When it comes up I get various errors from Kernal Panics to unknown errors. I have reseated the memory and made sure their is no dust in vents.

I am running latest version of Catalina. Spec's below... any advice would be great. Cheers.

Quad Core Intel Xeon E5 3.7GHz
12 GB RAM
AMD D300 2GB
Catalina 10.15.7

Thanks.

If you take a look at this thread you’ll find lots of people have stability issues with the D300s and Catalina. The consensus is that it’s an issue with the graphics card drivers.
My Mac Pro 6,1 was rock solid with Mojave but an unstable mess with Catalina. Big Sur doesn’t appear any better when I tried it on an external boot drive.

Here is an error I got.

I have something similar, but it only lasts for a few seconds, and then it "fast forwards" everything I clicked around on when it resumes...

I had the same problem, when it freezes you can press:

Control ^ + Shift ⇧ + Eject ⏏ - to sleep the machine and after a 30 seconds wake the machine and it should run fine for the rest of the day.

Basically the Mac Pro 2013 is a heap of **** get rid of it while you can before it breaks down, because when it does Its going to be really expensive to fix.

Welcome to the club!

I'm still hanging on to mine because I like the design. I plan on dumping it if the alleged half-mac pro comes out next year. (Honestly, the M1 mini may even be an adequate replacement.)

Anyways, I usually have to restart twice to fix the issue. After that, I normally get a few days out of it before it happens again.
