I'm totally pumped about the Mac Studio. I've been using and enjoying my Mac Pro since it was first released (I received mine in January 2014). I initially ordered it with a 6-core Xeon, 32GB, and a 512GB SSD. I've since upgraded the processor to a 12-core Xeon, the memory to 64GB, and the SSD to 1TB. The only upgrade that's paid off for my use-case is the processor upgrade - I've never needed more than the 512GB SSD or 32GB RAM I originally ordered.

Given all that, Apple delivered exactly what I needed with the Mac Studio. I ordered the base Ultra version and my only upgrade was to the 64-core GPU.

Are there any other 6,1 owners out there who are upgrading to the Mac Studio?

I was holding out for a Mac Pro but once they listed what this thing could do I was totally sold. There's no reason for me to need a full out Mac Pro over this. I don't need PCI-E cards as long as the ones built into the thing are sufficient. Modular is nice, but for me this ticks the boxes. I ordered a maxed out Studio (with 4tb SSD) and 2 of the new monitors. Can't wait.

I'm a user of 5,1 Mac Pros (two of them, one absolutely maxed out) and a 6,1 which is absolutely maxed out (2.7 12 core, 64GB, 1TB).

I'm still tempted by a 7,1 base model Mac Pro and then upgrade it, but this Mac Studio does tick a lot of boxes for me and the price is more reasonable than I expected. It appears to be a monster of a machine.

As i'm 6,1 fan, I love every thing about trashcan, quiet, a size and its performance.

I am more than happy about Mac studio. (and I'm just order it)

I plan to trade in my nMP (purchased early '14) for a Studio. The nMP is a great little computer, and still quite capable for basic usage.

The Studio is what I always wanted - a high end Mac Mini.

This nasty crash while sleeping bug and the lack of support for modern software features has me looking hard at the Mac Studio. If Monterey is the last macOS to support old Intel Xeons then the 6,1 is gone!
The only thing causing me pause is the $1,200 price to upgrade to 4TB storage to hold my photo library internally with room to grow for the next few years. External storage isn‘t as seamless with Time Machine backups and a 4TB TB3 SSD isn’t much cheaper at $900+.

Also a trash can owner and lover. Never want to give it up but I know the day is coming sooner then later.

this new studio knocks it out of the park in form factor and size. I mean totally out of the park.

my only reservation specific to my use case is I wish there was an intel option buried way down and hidden somewhere as I need boot camp. So I will keep using my trash can until it dies hoping windows makes it to silicon when that day arrives. But that’s my use, otherwise I feel apple is gettingback on track and this delivers a product that perfectly fits what apple needed in the line up

I already canceled my initial order and re-ordered, this time with the M1U/64-core GPU/2TB/128GB. I have to wait until mid-May for it to arrive (seems like that was the time-frame for a few other 128GB configurations I checked on, even right after the announcement) but I'd rather do that than kick myself a couple years from now for not ordering the 128GB in the first place.

I also need Windows; in my case for a few non-intensive tasks so I bought a cheap HP Pavilion Aero laptop. Actually, it wasn't a bad deal - Ryzen 7 5800U (8-core), 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD for only $700. But 99.9% of the time it'll be in the closet.

The 6,1 is arguably a better looking machine than the Studio - it had some real thought put into the design. The latter is obviously vastly more performant, but it's 'fat mini' look is pretty uninspired. It looks like a lazy Photoshop mockup based on a rumour; normally the actual release looks nothing like it, but here it was bang on.

Its great for me as I never needed the expandability of a Mac Pro, or the very top specs, but due to its performance (and thermals), it was often the only Mac I could buy which suited my needs.

Now I can get a desktop machine with very good performance, a decent amount of RAM and not have to pay the cost of an entry-level Mac Pro. I've already used the M1 Max in laptop form so I know its going to be more than powerful enough for my workflow.

Its not going to be for everyone, but I suspect there will be a lot of people who can now get the performance they need at a fraction of the cost and desk-space!

The 6,1 was on sale until 2019, I think we can expect a few more MacOS upgrades.

I too have a 6-core Xeon / 32GB / 512GB SSD MacPro 6,1.

It's been a solid workhorse for the last 8 years.

I ordered the MacStudio Ultra (base config) and I expect it to last me another 8 years.

Happy with the price and performance, kind of disappointed with the looks - this thing is ugly! I liked how easy it was to open the 2013 MP to clean out the fan. Not sure how easy the studio will be to open up. Looks a bit cramped honestly.

Only other wish is that it had a few more ports. I like them ports.

Good point. I should have been specific: support for firmware updates is more important because firmware can’t be downgraded and isn’t updated regularly.

The Mac Studio is a very good replacement for the 6,1 (and the cube) but it is not as beautiful. The studio is basically an extruded Mac mini with some perforations. Uninspiring at best. The beauty lies inside the Mac Studio. Price is OK for replacing high end iMacs. The last step up to 64 GPU cores is too expensive.

PS. Unfortunately my 6,1 GPUs stopped working so now it is MBP 16 M1 Pro because I need a mobile studio for online teaching. Now my 6,1 is stying on my book shelf with the outer case removed. Nice looking internals and case. DS.

I have the base model 6,1 with ram upgraded to 32Gb. What degree of increased performance would I get from the base model Mac Studio???

Both of them have their uses. I can't, for example put 1.5TB of RAM in the Mac Studio.

That said, I'll be getting a Mac Studio, and selling my Mac Pro - Whilst I love the Mac Pro, I would benefit from the performance of the M1 Ultra. What I'll miss is the modularity of upgrades. With the Mx ecosystem, I'm tied to what Apple offers.

It's exactly what I was looking for to replace my 6,1. I placed my order this morning as well. I'm just hoping that MacRumors sets up a separate forum for discussion of it to keep it apart from the general toxicity of Pro discussions.
Sadly, there will be toxicity in the Studio forum as well --- it's just the nature of peniscomputer-envy.
