I just received a Mac Pro and after using it for a day there’s one problem I’ve encountered.

The screen will randomly become static on the monitor I’ve connected. I’m connected to the monitor using HDMI and the graphics is the Radeon Pro Vega II. The monitor is 4k60hz.

I have tried reconnecting the cable. The problem fixes after turning off the monitor and turning it back on, but the problem will repeat after a random amount of time, 3-10 minutes.

I have a feeling the graphics card could be defective, but I hope not because the availability of Mac Pros here are very scarce so I may not be able to get a replacement within the next few weeks or month.

Does anyone know why this is happening and is there a solution?

apple,

Just a huge, speculative guess: bad cable?

Tom
I think this is a possibility.

I’ve tested with another computer and didn’t encounter the same issue though, so I’m not sure it’s the cable. I will go purchase another cable to test just in case.

I added an attached image to show what is happening with my monitor.

apple,

Also be aware that all cables are not necessarily up to the job of 4K/60. If you buy another try to see if you can find one that is up to your monitor's specs.

I use Displayport for my monitors and it seems to work OK.

Static is not something you get with digital displays (HDMI/DisplayPort). Static is a choice made by the display or the GPU/OS (I'm not sure which of those three is the case) when it's not getting a signal - it's like a screen saver mode. If the static is from the GPU/OS, then the display should say that it's receiving a proper signal (it should show resolution and refresh rate). If the static is from the display, then the display should say something about that.

If the static is from the GPU/OS, then I guess you can try a different OS to see if the static is from the GPU or the OS.

I believe I've seen this kind of static before, but I can't remember which display it was or if it was DisplayPort/HDMI/DVI.

Maybe it was HDCP related? But I think in that case the display should go black?.

I got an HDMI to USB-C adapter cable and it worked with my existing HDMI cable which is very odd to me. Could the HDMI port on my graphics card be faulty?
