Mac Pro A1289 PSU Fan

Hi.

I have a Mac Pro A1289 that randomly shuts off. I suspected the PSU unit was failing and a search of the forums yielded a few with the same issue that turned out to be the PSU. I took my unit apart and realised that it wasn't the PSU itself but rather the fan in front of the PSU that wasn't working, hence the PSU was heating up and shutting off due to its thermal protection. Easy fix i thought, just get a replacement fan and i'm done.

Easier said then done.

A search for the fan unit has yielded zero results. I'm able to find the PCI fans, the cage fans etc, but no one seems to be carrying the PSU fan.

Anyone has any ideas where I can get the replacement fan or has purchased one before and can point me in the right direction?

Any advise appreciated.

Have you tried disconnecting the power cables to it, clean contacts and re-connect?

Yup, tried that. Reseating the connector and cleaning the contacts. No dice.

How about the connection to the board also and the cable itself, it doesn't have any nicks in it? Sorry if I'm just beating the dead horse here, but as you said, you couldn't find a replacement fan

Hey, no worries about beating a dead horse, I really appreciate your input.

Yeah, checked and cleaned the connectors on the board. The cable seems ok but I can't test it without possibly taking the fan apart. Which I'll probably do as I can't get it to work anyways. Anyhow, was able to source a used fan over on eBay, will wait for it to get here before I try anything else. Thankfully I'm not really using the mac pro much now, so I can afford to wait, except for the wife who's complaining about the dissected computer lying around . Still would like to get up and working thou, running Pro Tools on my Macbook Pro is a pain.

Oh yea... forget about running PT on an MBP. That's the main reason I started buying the Mac Pros. And now I'm hooked on 96K/32bit sessions, something my old laptop couldn't dream of handling. Lol

I'm sorry to say that unfortunately I recycled my fans not but a week ago, zero demand and a nagging wife will do that I'm afraid. I'll let you l know if I get hold of another.
