Hey everyone, I purchased a Mac pro early this year and I have two displays connected with mini displayports. I am interested in adding another monitor, and would thus need another graphics card. What would you recommend? Any specific models? I'm not planning on gaming with it, mainly text and graphics.

well what mac pro do you have right now (model), with what card??

Without that info id say a ATI Radeon HD 5770, but then nobody knows if it works in your mac pro (as the 5770 doesn't work in every mac pro)

If you have a 2010 Mac Pro model, it would have came with either a 5770 or 5870 as the stock card. Both of these cards would have 2 MDP and 1 DVI port. So you could technically connect a third monitor if it was DVI.

Outside of that, if you're just looking for a cheap card to drive the third monitor, even a GT 120 would do. That one has 1 MDP and 1 DVI and it's $100 less than a second 5770.

Hey thanks for the responses! I purchased the Mac earlier this year and when I go to "about this Mac" it says Mid 2010. There is a 5770 in it right now. I have 2 cinema displays connected with mini display port and it looks like there is 1 dual link port available.

Derp. Thanks for the help, I just realized my error. I solved my problem!

I would get a second 5770.

I have a GT 120 and a 5870 in the same machine running Lion, and there are severe performance degradation issues. I have an open ticket with Apple and they are investigating. I haven't heard any issues with a dual 5770 setup.

(Not holding my breath for a fix any time soon.)

I have the same problem, jerky and bad performance with the GT 120 & 5870 installed.

If you need another card, OWC is blowing out their new 5770s for 217.99, just got their garage sale email and noticed that......

I have a 2009 MP with a 5870 and a GT120. I don't have any noticeable video issues with Lion. I have several other issues with Lion, but video isn't one of them.

When i upgraded to Lion, i did not do a clean install. Just an upgrade from SL.

What issues are you seeing? (yes i'm thread jacking, but the OP said he solved his problem).

Badly degraded framerate. Starcraft 2 has gone from about 70 fps to 15 fps.

Remove the 120 GT, and everything is happy again.
