Mac Pro and 30" Display - Good Deal?

A dual processor 2010 Mac Pro for $1200 is a good deal if it comes with all the components, let alone a 30" Cinema Display. If I had $1200 to spend, I would swoop that up in a heartbeat.
Not to doubt your experience, but really? Aren't the towers selling for like $550 on Amazon?

Without knowing more about the MP config (CPUs? RAM? drives?), it's hard to say too much, but it sounds like a pretty good deal if the items are in good working shape... it actually sounds almost too good to be true.
Sure there are old MPs for $500, but the 2010 models (especially dual CPU ones) are still quite sought after, and I think you'd find most selling on ebay for over $1,200 just by themselves.

Dunno if it matters to you, but you (and I) will be left out of 10.10's Continuity and Handoff features, and we're already missing the ability to Airplay our screens to an Apple TV.
And the point is not so much those exact features, but the idea that more and more future Apple technologies are not related to your processor speed but are based on other details like what version Bluetooth you have. I'm sure there'll be more omissions to come for us next year.
I deal with it because After Effects performance matters more to me than Airplay. But it's something to think about since you've specifically said that, for you, this is not about processing power, but storage space. There are a lot of great external storage solutions out there.
I'm not telling you not to get a tower (I did!) but just that you don't seem to have as many 'pros' as I do to offset the 'cons.'

If your main concern is storage, you can get a monster external hard drive to hold terabytes of data, all in a peripheral you can slip into your pocket. Much more cost effective as long as you don't need more computing power.
Dual socket for $1200 - buy it for me and I'll get a box shipped over from the uk. With the pound being so strong at the moment it would be worth it. Single sockets sell for even more than that over here.

After stress testing - snap hands off.
Ott for your uses I would consider selling it on for a profit as using a 980 watt PSU Mac Pro for storage isn't exactly efficient!

I concur. I don't believe you'll need the power that comes with that type of a machine, but $1200 is a STEAL for that tower! Buy and sell for a profit and get yourself a nice iMac or a new Mac Mini (assuming they'll exist soon) with some NAS storage!
This at least is easily fixable.

the 5.1 2.4 8 core is the most desirable mac pro available rite now i believe. Due to the fact that you can make it a 2.93 12 core beast for $300 bucks x5670's.
All worked out! Doing a fresh install of Mavericks and moving a TM backup as I type this. Purchased with the intent of using as a home server, then you all convinced me I ought to try and flip it for cash.
After picking it up and realizing how mint it actually is, I may be back to using it as a server. For starters, it had an extra SSD not mentioned (neither are OEM). It also has had a Blu Ray burner installed. Hoping to get some HandBrake goodness running later to see how much I can actually speed up day to day activities.

It's a great buy. A Mint condition 5.1 8 core with a 30" display, SSD are the best. I think it's best to keep it and don't sell it. The 30" ACD is one of the best monitors and most durable. Enjoy your new toy.

I definitely think it was a deal, but I am wondering if I am ripping myself off by not reselling it to pocket some change. The rMBP suits my needs just fine, but I was hoping for an iMac or Mac Mini. I just happened to stumble across this. I think if I can get a decent price for the monitor local, I will sell it and then consider parting with the desktop even if it means shipping. I just can't rationalize this much power even if it is doing a super slick job of ripping and encoding movies.

My experience with Craigs List is that people tend to WAY overprice computer gear, not underprice it. And people who own Mac Pros don't tend to sell them to "make rent."

Was all handled through a local Mac shop as a broker, so all safe on that front.
