I have a Mac Pro and Logitech Z-5500s. Ever since I have had my Mac Pro, I have used the digital optical port to play audio. I was under the impression that this way, I could get 5.1 audio output through DVDs and all content that supported 5.1. However, I recently noticed in Audio MIDI Setup that 5.1 is greyed out and I am not able to select it.

Does the Mac Pro support 5.1? If so, how can I get I get 5.1 output from my MP?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I have Logitech Z906 connected via optical cable to Mac Pro 3.1. If your source audio is 5.1, you will hear it just fine on all channels.

So, ignore audio midi setup and enjoy.

It is a different thing if you want to hear stereo on all speakers....
I wanted this as well, but did not want to mess with tweakes and plug-ins....and this is the reason I bought Z906.
This system has 4.1 and 3D surround presets built in. It clones stereo source and you can hear every source on all channels. I am not sure that Z-5500 can do that. Sombody who owns Z-5500 should correct me.

Ya I am pretty sure it will duplicate audio to have something come out of all speakers. I was just worried that no matter what content was being played, it would never be 5.1.
