Mac Pro base - best mem config for 8gb upgrade

New to the Mac Pro lineup, thinking of getting the base later this year. I know it comes with 3 1gb sticks of ram in it. I definitely want to have at least 8gb of ram on board. Can I remove one of the 1gb sticks and add in two 4gb sticks for a total of 10gb without a problem? Or would it run better pulling out all the 1gb sticks and just using the two 4gb sticks I purchase? Seems a shame to "throw away" all 3gb of ram it comes with if I don't need to.

General answer: nope.

Exception: some video apps apparently can gain (a few %) performance by using identical memory chips in groups of 3.
