Mac Pro Booster fan

I upgraded from a single CPU tray to a dual CPU tray in my 2010 Mac Pro and one of my CPU's is warmer than the other...I also see that one of the Booster fans shows 0...
Is there something wrong with my tray or...? Temp difference is 5-7 degrees centigrades at full load so it's not a big problem so far...

CPU temps are fine. It is normal for the one in back to be warmer because it is cooled by the air warmed up by everything in front of it.

Booster fans don't look right. If I recall correctly, those should be around 1000-1200rpm, not 2000 and 0. Maybe it's just the software that is incorrect--are any fans actually running super fast and/or not at all?

Verify that the fan connector inside the heatsink shell didn't slip out of the holding clip when the heatsink was installed and thus isn't fully plugged into the motherboard connector. I was able to use a small screwdriver to press it into place through the heatsink slits without re-opening it when it happened to me after upgrading my CPUs.

The first one runs at 2000 because I've set it at that speed manually (fan control)
The second one does not show up in fan control at all...which i find kind of worrisome

As far as I can tell it is properly inserted and should work...I have tested two heatsinks and they both have the same symptom...

How do I know which one is which though...I.E...which one is the troublesome one...?

How can you tested two heatsinks (for the same socket), confirmed both have the same symptoms. But you don't know which one is faulty (Heatsink A or B)?

Anyway, for fans issue, the 1st thing to do is SMC reset.

haha, very good question, I replaced the pair of them...as they where both in bad shape, I did not check them one by one...in retrospect that maybe should have been my plan...

Will do an SMC and PRAM reset...

If you have this problem before you replace the heatsinks. Then may be the CPU tray itself has problem (e.g. the fan connector).

I never own the dual CPU tray, and never see any documents explain how iStat define booster 1 and 2. But if assume booster 1 is for CPU A, and booster 2 is for CPU B. Then when you open the side panel, facing the tray. The one that on the left hand side (up stream of the airflow) is the booster 2.

I assume that it was my battered heatsinks that was the problem, but clearly that wasn't it...

I'll do some testing, running Handbrake (CPUs at full speed) gives a difference of only a few centigrades so whatever the problem it doesn't seem to have that much real world impact...

I've been running Macs Fan Control; until today's update, it was not showing the BoostB fan speed on my dual-hex 5,1, but was displaying CPU B's temperatures. I was fearing a hardware problem, but upon installing the update, both Boost A and B fan speeds are now showing.
