Mac Pro Buying Hard drives

I am waiting for my new Mac Pro 2.66 to come, Est aug 14th ship . I find myself looking for ways to pass the time. One of them has been to look for some new hard drives to put in when it comes. I orderd the stock 250Gb and want to get a 500 and mabye another 250 for the bays. I do some video work. I have found Hatachi, Seagate, Maxtor and Western Digital (I have had problems with Western Digital before) all with 16MB data buffer and comprable prices. So my question to all of you is given your experance what brand would you go with? I am leaning Seagate but not for any really good reason just that I am used to them. Thanks for your input.

I like Seagates.

Western Digital - Been using them for year with excelent results

Ok. Seagate - as these appear to be the prefered choice for Apple so "probably" will have fewer compatibility issues.

Note - Maxtor was bought by Seagate a few months back. For now the name is still being used to sell Maxto hardware. Be interesting to see what happens.

I don't know that I'd go with Seagate, or at least not the same model that Apple uses in the Mac Pro (7200.9). It's one of the "clickiest" hard drives I've ever heard. Maybe it's because the rest of the machine is so quiet, but it seems seriously over-the-top noisy when reading/writing.

Try StorageReview.

Storage Review is one of oldest and most respected hard drive review websites out there. They've been a little slow to review the latest hard drives recently (Seagate's 750 GB drive hasn't been reviewed yet,) but through the last generation is well reviewed.

Just go to the database, and search for what is important to you. (raw transfer rate, 'desktop' usage, 'high end' usage, noise, heat...)

I've had a western digital fail on me before and I lost all my data so I don't recommend them. I like Maxtors and Seagates because I haven't had a problem with them.

I don't mean to be "that guy" but all hard drives can fail, regardless of brand. I had a drive die on me and I don't even remember the brand -- it didn't matter, I called up the company and got a replacement in 2 days.

You can't guarantee that your drive will be error free if you go with X brand. You can ensure that whichever brand you choose doesn't have a history of making crappy drives, and that the company has a 3+ year warranty with good customer service.
