This is new. I choose shutdown from the apple menu and all the apps and windows close and it just stays there. I force shutdown by holding the button. On boot it hangs at the Apple menu. It'll stay like that or 30 minutes. I've never waited longer. Then I force shutdown and reboot and it comes on. What's going on here?

2019 Mac Pro 192 GB ram. Catalina 10.15.7. I have some OWC drive enclosures with CCC orders on but this has never been an issue before.

Mac,

Any new software installed lately? Have you tried "Force Quit" to see if anything is running that may cause the computer to stay awake?

Unless you're using a firmware password you can that MP in "verbose mode" and perhaps get clues on what's going on with the hanging boot.

However, I'd suggest starting with creating a new user account to test and check if the same behavior occurs…and with the minimum of peripherals attached.

I have that on one of my machines, no idea what causes it. I shut the thing down properly by opening terminal and issuing the 'sudo shutdown -h now' command.

Thanks folks. I'll check into this later. No experience with verbose mode. I have installed new software and updates over the past week or two. Weirdly I also installed a power conditioner in the studio. That seemed to be time coincident. Can't be that. But I've been in the habit of leaving the MP on 24/7 and onlt reboot when required. Now I've decided to shutdown nightly. Hm.

I got this problem again. I have no idea why. But in this case it won’t wake up. Gone fishing. Out to lunch. I walk away for an hour and it won’t wake up so I have to force shutdown. Hope there isn’t anything unsaved.

I would start with performing a force quit on all running apps and not making them run on start up. Reboot. See if there are any apps you missed to stop from automatically launching on start up. Then reboot again. Check if the computer is running as expected without all your apps running.

If it still isn't performing as expected, it could either be a corrupt OS or a hardware issue.

Have you installed third-party memory?
