Mac Pro DVD not Loading and Automatically Ejecting

I have a 2008 Mac Pro. I have recently had an issue with DVD's not loading and eventually automatically ejecting. I have tried the DVD in other devices and it plays just fine but I can not get it to mount on the Mac pro.

Can someone please help.

It still has OS X Mavericks

Hello,

It's a long shot, but this happened to me once. I ended up buying a new DVD burner. When I opened the Mac Pro to remove the old "broken" one, I realized that the cable had come partially loose. I simply pushed it back in and booted the Mac up to find that it was working flawlessly.

Worth a check!

Thanks for the help. I can try that. The thing that gets me is that cd's work just fine but this did does not. That is the story in both of my dual drives.

SO I checked the cables and they seem to be connected just fine.

Any ideas on what might be causing this.

Again the Cd's work fine but the DVD is not working and the same result on both of my Dual installed drives.

Hello,

Have you tested this on another user? Or logging in as the Root user (do a google search if you don't know how to activate the root user)? If it works on other users, it's a configuration issue. If it works on none of the other users, including the root user, it's most likely a hardware issue.

Ok I have Tried the Root user with two different DVD's both the same movie but two different disc's in the two separate drives. They both sit in the drive for a while then eject. I have also tried a much older movie and it also did not work. But Cd's still work. I checked the Mac Pro system pref info and they are both identical OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A Drives.

Can someone please give me some help as to what in the world is going on.

Hi Nitro1. Years ago I had an external Sony DVD drive. The drive could read CDs but could not read any kind of DVDs. I just purchased a new Blu Ray drive. I am not sure why 2 of your DVD drives are not working. Probably try some more DVD discs with different contents and not only movies.
 
Movie DVDs have Region code on them, so if your drive is set to 1 which is for North America and you put a Region 4 (Central and South America) in the drive, then it might just sit there or spit out the disk! This is something CDs don't have so it "might" be the reason. Try putting an installation DVD in and see what it does.
 
OK. I recently installed iWork 08 onto my laptop from my desktop using remote disc. This was about 1 month ago. It worked just fine.

Now i put in the iWork 08 disc and it will not load it spins then ejects.

So now i am really confused.

I will try a Cd when i get back from work to make sure it still works as well.
 
DVD burners have two lasers - one for CD the other DVD. Your latter laser is busted, though you could try putting in a laser cleaner disc in to see if its dirt on the laser lens.

If not you need another optical drive.

Seems odd that all of a sudden they both die at the same time does it not?
 
Have you tried more than one DVD? It could easily be that the disk is a bit scratched. DVD players in computers are often much fussier than those in stand-alone (home theater) players, which desperately try to play anything no matter how messed up the disk is. The reason is that if a movie stutters, it's annoying but not a big deal, but if you can't read a data DVD perfectly, that's a big problem.

A few other things: "laser cleaners" are bunk. Don't bother. Lasers also basically never break. They are just solid-state diodes. On the other hand, DVD drives have turned to garbage in general. If anything is wrong with the drive, it's probably just unbalanced due to being manufacturing costs being reduced to the level of, oh, say $0.99. Either that, or mal-ware from the RIAA/MPAA being inserted by the manufacturer.

I've had similar things happen with burners before and from way back when they were not as cheap as chips as they are now. Mind you the quality of the drives are nowhere near as good as back then.
 
Gav is right, the DVD lens might have burn out and can't read anymore. Do you think you can borrow one from a friend? if not, buy a new one and see if it works

I have tried two of the same movie but different Disc's and one of a older movie. Neither worked.

I am doing the update to Yosemite now and maybe that will help.

I do not have any friends who will have a internal drive for the mac.
I guess I will start to look for new ones. Any recommendations?

I guess LG would be a good recommendation, they have an acceptable quality and good price! Now if you also want to play Bluray movies with it, then purchase a bluray player!

Blu Ray drives can work in Macs as sometimes I play Blu Ray movies in OSX. You'll need a converter to convert BD movies to MKV format http://www.makemkv.com/download/ and MKV may be played using VLC player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

VLC has a nice built in equalizer that you can customize the audio. You'll just need a good multi-media speaker.

Hi CRJackson. Thanks for the link on the MCE Blu Ray drive. I am currently using a Pioneer Blu Ray drive but I'll be needing a second Blu Ray drive for my other machine and considering MCE. Hope you're enjoying your weekend.
