Mac Pro DVD Tray Stuck Open

Hey all,
I've been looking and looking and couldn't find anything. The DVD tray is stuck in the open position and won't retract. When I hit the eject button, it moves like it's trying, but only travels about 1/4". I tried gently nudging it in, and that didn't work, so then I tried a bit firmer and combos of that plus tilting it. Nothing's working. Anybody else have this problem?

Also, I figured that maybe it just crapped out on me, so I'd get a new one, but I don't think you can get the drive out if the tray is open, because you just pull the housing straight out, right? Any suggestions on how to get it out?

You could force it close to allow you to take it out. It sounds like either the gears have busted or the rubber line snapped.

Thanks for the reply, TEG. I was afraid it was going to come down to that, so I'll probably do just what you suggested this weekend, unless somebody else has any ideas...?

There's no need to be that careful with your optical drives. I have always just pushed the tray to close the drives that I've had --- never had a problem. I'm pretty sure they're designed to be handled this way. And if you do break it, just buy a new one, they're dirt cheap.

Try closing your drive all the way by pushing it as far as it'll go. If that doesn't fix anything, I guess you can try unscrewing the drive enclosure and see if there's something obvious obstructing the tray mechanism. If not, just buy a new one. I've had good experience with Pioneer's drives. I currently have a DVR-111d.

I haven't seen one that uses a drive belt is quite some time. Does anyone still make drives that use them?

They are, but I still don't like it. I'm always afraid of it breaking.

If it won't release the disk, you would have to remove the drive and use a paper clip in the small hole (manual release/eject).

How about the little door being stuck down? I haven't used my DVD drive in a long time, and when I used it a few days ago, the little door that opens to let the drive out is now stuck. I got it to close a few times by sticking my finger in there and pushing it down so it would pop back up, but now it is stuck.

Any ideas?

Pull out the optical bay unit, and look for any obstructions, or bent metal. The drive may also have slid in the mounts, and is interfering with the door. I'd think it something nice and simple.

Hard to say beyond that without seeing it for myself.

I recently had this issue with my new Early 2008 MP.


when the aluminum door is stuck down in the push down gently yet firm directly in the center of the door bay, then it should release up and push down again after it gets halfway up and let it then close normally and try again with the ejecy key, give tia f ew rounds of open/close/open/close.


otherwise this is a pretty good fix:

just gotta remove the caddy, loosen the screw a half notch and it should work fine too.

I just bought my Mac Pro 4 weeks ago and my DVD door is doing the same thing.

I'd suggest this fix : remove optical drive, place in recycling bin, replace with HDD or SSD. If DVD player/burner absolutely necessary, get USB external one.

LOL, there are people who are actually afraid to manually push in the DVD tray? I have never closed the tray in any other way. They are built to support it.

^^ That and keeping a paperclip handy to toggle the button apple removes from the front bezel.

Yeah there is a screw that tightens the drive door, you can loosen it a tad bit and it should be just fine.

Mine has been doing the same thing lately. Doesn't really bother me though, as I can just push down on it with my finger and have it pop up. (like you say)
