I am guessing that the next OS X release won't officially support these systems then.
Should still get Yosemite updates for a while, iTunes, Safari etc so hopefully can last through till mk2 of the rMB and hopefully a better mac mini are out.
My 2010 Mac Pro should be good still for a few more years and get new OS X releases.
There is no actual reason to stop it getting them. The only way would be if Apple artificially imposed a limit. But the never do that so we have no issues.

Apple rarely imposes hard limits (or limits that can't be circumvented for the diehards), but in terms of the stuff they troubleshoot and support they are pretty aggressive in pruning.
My 2008s at work handle Yosemite fine (even on a spinning boot drive!) so I don't seem much in the way of performance issues likely to be a reason. The support status should put people of those models on warning though.
That page is all concerning HARDWARE support. I think that this statement has been around some time:-
Obsolete products are those that were discontinued more than seven years ago. Apple has discontinued all hardware service for obsolete products with no exceptions. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products.
