Hello All,

This is my first post, so please excuse me if I ramble.

I just got my new MacPro, - 6 core – 512 – D700’s. When I first plugged it in and began to do all filling in and registering stuff, the phone rang. I went to the other room to answer it. I heard a strange noise, at first I thought it was a gardener with a leaf blower, I walked back into the studio and it was the MACPRO. The fan was so noisy and loud it was like sitting next to Air Force One. I also noticed it was getting quite warm, almost hot. Imagine holding a cup of hot coffee without the handle, it was hot to the touch.

I turned it off and called the vendor – not an Apple store. They said it was probably running a “Self Check” ?, and would be OK. I turned it back on and it seem to be all right, no noise, not hot, but still quite warm.

A few days later I noticed it was once again getting hotter than I thought it should. I called again and they said to bring it in. After I got there they said it was indeed too hot – and that was after a 20 min. car ride.

I spent the next few days driving around to a few Apple stores and touched their MacPros – everyone must of thought I had some weird thing going on – all of the Macs everywhere were very cool, not warn at all, and they run all day.

They called back and said it was fixed, their prognosis was the Ram wasn’t seated properly and caused it to overheat ?????.

I am not a techie at all. I have no point of reference on how warm is “Too Warm” It is now again running warm.

I have a widget “iStat” that gives temperature readings, but I don’t know if they are normal or not.

I called Apple care and told them the whole story, and they listened and said it didn’t seem to be a problem, and were a little dismissive about it.

Yesterday I turned it on and did nothing, no Internet, no e-mail, no Photoshop. It just sat there. The readings went from 81 to 126 degrees back down to 95, back up to 112, down to 90 , back up to 16 again. With no load at all, just the OS running. This went on all day long – those are the readings attached.

Am I being an alarmist ?, is there a problem ?, should I be concerned ?

I can’t find anywhere or anyone who can tell me the acceptable operating temp range. I know it all depends on load and usage and a lot of variables. But there must be something.

Thanks for any opinions and advise.

Do a GPU stress test and monitor the temperature. There are either 2 possible problems that cause your nMP hot. 1.CPU
2. GPU. Do some benchmarks repeatedly and report back to us.

Lads,

Thanks for the replies. Yes, they are in Fahrenheit. As I said, I am not tech minded at all - I'm a photographer. So, I have no idea on how to run the tests you suggested. The vender did say they ran a variety of tests, but didn't say what they were.

My only comparative tests were actually touching a number of MacPro's. Mine was the only one that was very warm. Two of my friends have them as well, neither experienced the fan issues, or heat, They are video editors and put a much heavier load on theirs than I ever would.

Thanks again,

The temperatures you quote are not really consistent with the case being notably warm. Note your fans are basically at minimum (770-790rpm) speed at all times. With my quad-core I can max all of the CPU cores for long periods and the machine goes up perhaps 10º C but doesn’t bother cranking up the fans. Only slamming the GPUs makes it ramp up substantially.

Coming from a 2012 Mini, the contrast is very obvious: to do less, the Mini was much hotter internally and externally, and massively louder.

As far as I have gathered info before buying my nMP it should just get a bit warm but never truly hot. I do not recall anyone saying the enclosure gets so hot that he/she feels it as hot as a cup of hot coffee.
Something seems truly wrong with your computer if this is the case.
You should insist with the techs of Apple. It is not what is supposed to be.
