Hello everyone,
Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to offer. I believed I had researched this scenario fully, but evidently something has gone awry. I'll try to be as detailed as possible. Last night I upgraded my Early 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 (firmware flashed to 5,1) to a 12 core machine (dual x5690s). The machine has been working splendidly before the upgrade. The system was originally a 4 core that I upgraded successfully to a hex core system. After getting a good deal on a dual processor tray, i ordered the components (including 128gb ram). I delidded the processors myself. Followed many tutorials for that process and everything seemed ok in that regard.
Originally at boot up it showed only CPU A's ram, though showed both processors. I tightened the heatsink of CPU B and everything pulled up fine. However, after a few minutes the system would shut itself down without warning. This would be at idle, simply sitting at the desktop. Temperatures in Mac Fan Control seemed ok, hovering around 45-55 degrees C. No warning as to the shutdowns.
I attempted a bare bones startup with only minimal ram (one 16 gig stick for each processor), with no luck. I have removed the tray, removed the heatsinks, reseated the chips and retightened with no luck. At this point I'm led to believe my PSU may be failing from the excess power draw. Is this a reasonable assumption, though it worked fine with the 6 core setup?
Thanks!
