Hey all - I'm sure this has been done many times before, but things change over time and manufacturers go up and down.

I'm wondering which hard drive manuf. you all prefer and why? What have been your experiences? I know that HDs are becoming more and more universal, but there are still differences to help the decision.

I'm looking to buy 1/2/3 more 500GB hds for my new Mac Pro, and I think I've narrowed it down to this Seagate, and this Western Digital

The Seagate is nearly $100 more for the same size drive, but SUPPOSEDLY uses perpendicular recording (even though i thought it was only on the 750GB drive), and also has a .5ms faster avg. seek time and slightly faster av.g latency - in addition to a 2 yr longer warranty. Do these improvements warrant the $100 difference in price?

Also - I hear good things about Maxtor (some days lol).

Thoughts?

Both are good brands. Probably the best two on the market. I'm preferential to Western Digital, but that's just me. If the specs of the seagate are better, go with that. With the price difference, I think the WD is a steal though. Where's that extra $90 going performance wise, will you notice it? That's a hefty premium, especially 2 or 3 times over.

I've used about 10 Western Digital drives myself over the last 5 years and not one has failed. My friends have used Western Digital drives also over the same period and no failures either. Very pleased with performance too
