Mac pro late 2008 graphics card

After about 2 years of faithful service, my 8800gt fudged up, leaving room for a new graphics card. However, i heard something about Mac pros not being able to use all graphic cards, only the ones that mac sells. Is this true ? I was looking at getting the Ati radeo 5870 thats 4500 crowns here in sweden (750ish dollars) which is awfully expensive. Would getting this card from a "normal" retailer still work ? because that would about half the price ? Otherwise, does any other new "badass" card like Gtx 590 work in my mac pro ?

I am mostly using the w7 partition of it for gaming, producing, programming, mapping and, in the future, modelling/texturing.
M mac partition is mostly for the occational school work, like PPPs and word documents.

I see... so I will basicly have to buy the Mac card or flash a PC card... Guess i will have to go with the mac card then, because my dad, who´s paying for it, probably wont approve of flashing. Thanks for your help !
