Good News:

Apple is currently hard at work on a “completely rethought” Mac Pro, with a modular design that can accommodate high-end CPUs and big honking hot-running GPUs, and which should make it easier for Apple to update with new components on a regular basis. They’re also working on Apple-branded pro displays to go with them.

Bad News:

These next-gen Mac Pros and pro displays will not ship until next year. In the meantime, Apple is today releasing meager speed-bump updates to the existing Mac Pros. The $2999 model goes from 4 Xeon CPU cores to 6, and from dual AMD G300 GPUs to dual G500 GPUs. The $3999 model goes from 6 CPU cores to 8, and from dual D500 GPUs to dual D800 GPUs. Nothing else is changing, including the ports. No USB-C, no Thunderbolt 3 (and so no support for the LG UltraFine 5K display).

is this a late April fools joke? Sounds like we are going to get pretty much exactly what we all want want, but have to wait till next year.

However, just noticed that D800 GPU option sounds off, as the current top-end option is D700.

My first thought was that this was an April Fool. Then, when I checked the date, I was left wondering when in the past Apple has failed their user base so badly that they break their traditional veil of secrecy and effectively pre-announce a whole line of products. I'm kinda surprised people aren't being sacked for this.

I don't know if this is serious but "today" the Apple Store still shows the usual models, 4-cores/D300s and 6-cores/D500s, with up to 12-cores and D700s... Maybe it's still early. I'll wait for more reports before I start celebrating though... But if that's actually true, then that's excellent news indeed!!!

My though exactly. I thought it was an old item in my news feed. Had to triple check the date :)

I'm wondering if this was leaked on purpose. To at least us Mac Pro users some hope.

No leaking - Apple invited a group of journalists in. This is an official news release.

Amazing. At least users now have a rough roadmap to work to. I won't say credit to Apple as this is ridiculously overdue, but this has to be good news to a lot of people waiting for news on where to spend their money.
