Hey guys,

while I was working today I noticed a strange noise coming from the Mac Pro. I wasn't loud, it sounded a bit like something scrathing against something else really fast.
I turned the MP to open the case, and while turning, the noise suddendly stopped. So I turned it back, and then the noise came back. Then I tilted the case slightley, then back, and then it was away for a few minutes. Then I heard it again, tilted again, and so on. I'm dojng this for over an hour now, and I stat worrying about the MP. It's definately something physical, it's not the PSU. I suspect one of my HDDs.

I don't have the time to switch the HDDs now because at the moment, I need all of them.

What do you think?

Make time. If its an HDD, you could be minutes away from failure and losing the data from it.

I think I know what you mean. I would have said its almost a grinning sound? Mine does the same from time to time, I figured when I turn it on in the morning its cold but as it warms up the sound stops.

I'm doing a ackup at the moment...

My machine is warm, has been running for almost 7h now. Not under stress, almost idle though.
Your behaviour is kind of explainable, if metal heats up it expands.
But yes, the sound is a grinning sound. Tht was the word I was looking for :D

I think I found the issue :D
I recently moved the MP to the lower floor to have a LAN-party with a with friends (yes, I know, LAN-party with a MP, but with an eVGA GTX570 I smoked all of my friends laptops ;) ), and when I moved it back up in the morning, wasted after a long night gaming and drinking, I placed the MP on a cable, so the whole machine was standing a bit tilted. Absolutely silly mistake...

Sorry for using up your time ;)
