Hello All.

I have a Mac Pro 4,1 that I flashed awhile back to the 5,1 firmware for High Sierra support. All has been well, but now I'm looking to upgrade to Mojave. From all the walkthroughs I've seen it looks pretty straight forward. Running the Mojave installer prompts for a firmware upgrade as expected. When clicking shutdown I'm prompted for my admin credentials, but the machine doesn't shutdown to start the process. When booting off external Mojave media, I get the same screen and clicking Shut Down does nothing. If I manually shut down and attempt to go through the firmware upgrade, I get the fast blinking power light and tone as one would to start a firmware update, but after restart I'm right back where I left off.

Mac Pro has a supported metal card (RX 580) and from everything I've read and video walkthroughs this should just work. And advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

What bootrom version are you on now?

My 4,1 is currently running boot rom MP51.007F.B03. I realized I can't skip EFI updates and made High Sierra install media and funny enough I've ran into the same issue. So, now I'm trying to figure out how far back on installers I have to go to upgrade my Boot Rom to the next ver.

This is what I get for imaging High Sierra to this machine opposed to running actually installers, not fun.

I'm currently creating Sierra media hoping this contains the next boot rom update. If anyone has an answer, that would be awesome!

Highly possible your EFI partition is messed up and that's going to prevent any firmware update from taking.

Do you have any old spare SATA hard drive or SSD lying around? If so, then you may want to clear it off and install Sierra to that. Then do the High Sierra FW update, then Mojave.

You were correct! I ran all the updates on a spare drive and all the boot rom updates worked without issue.

I'm currently on MP51.0089B00 and running the Mojave installer. After reboot the screen went to completely scrambled/static video. I'm hoping this is expected since I'm running the non-EFI Radeon RX 580 in the machine during the upgrade.

Thank you everyone that responded. :)
