I have a 2.66 GHz Quad-Core (MacPro4,1) mac pro.

Recently I tried to upgrade this machine by replacing w3520 with w3580.
After replacing the CPU, I boot my machine and then it boot o.k.
I checked processor from about this mac and then the machine suddenly froze without doing anything. After reboot the machine, I got cycling "kernel Panic". At this time, my OS was Mavericks. I tried other OS such as 10.8, 10.7, 10.6. I got kernel panic from both 10.8 and 10.7. But I boot successfully with 10.6.

Since I don't have any idea how to fix this problem, I changed w3580 with the original w3520. After re-boot, I received the same kernel panic from 10.9, 10.8, and 10.7. I can only boot my mac with 10.6 with w3520 or with w3580.

I am stuck now and I don't understand why I am having the same issue with the original w3520.
I try the safe boot with shift key and it worked with Mavericks although everything is extremely slow.

Can anyone shed light on this problem?

See if you've bent any pins?

Check memory is seated properly?

Sounds like you've bent something.

I checked all pins (those that sit under the CPU) and they are so tiny and not easy to check.
But when I checked them from reflected light, they all seems to be aligned correctly.
The memory is showing the correct memory of 16GB.

When I installed w3580, I put too much of thermal paste?
Could this have caused the problem I have?
But when I replaced w3520 back again, I put a right amount of thermal paste.
So the problem should have been vanished with the original w3520.

Any more solution to this problem that I can try?

I checked the pins microscopically and there is no bend.

I am assuming that w3580 is fine since OS 10.6.8 shows the process of 3.32 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon from about this mac.

I am wondering if the logic board might get damaged. Is there a possibility?
Is there any replacement that I should try to fix this problem? Thanks.

If it is a hardware problem, then I should not be able to boot successfully with snow leopard, right?
I am very much puzzled...

OK, above KP log points on graphics card. You have Nvidia one it's crashing IOPCI extensions set. If you have another card try it, you can also try safe boot with 10.8.

Post KP log (Console/System Diagnostic Reports/ or /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports on OS HDD) from 10.7 and 10.8.

Exactly. Which one do you have?

I just pulled out GeForce 8800GT. Originally I had two in my mac.
The other one is ATI Radeon HD 5770.

Thanks million. You saved my life.
The mac boots with no problem now.

I need a rest...

----------

One question I have now is the culprit graphics card was o.k. before CPU upgrade. Why it becomes a problem after the upgrade?
What would happen if I put it back now? (which I don't want to try now though)

That's how it is with 8800s. It wasn't directly connected with CPU upgrade. Just a coincidence. One day they work, another day they don't anymore. Baking them sometimes helps (google it) but usually not for long.

You probably removed it to work on Mac.

The issue with 8800GT is little tiny solder balls under the GPU chip.

Nvidia used bad solder when the world wide ant-lead stuff went down.

Lead may be poisonous, but it is also perfect for solder.

The stuff they formulated for G92 goes brittle and bad after multiple heat & cool sessions.

When handling 8800GT it is CRUCIAL to not bend or twist them AT ALL.

The card can bend, the heatsink can not.

More than likely you can "bake" it back to life, in any case you have exactly 0 (ZERO) to lose as card is 100% worthless as is.

Look up baking here or online elsewhere.

I do 380-410 for 9 min, others have different "recipes".

Here is the CRUCIAL part, when removing the heat sink, lay card on table edge so that the bracket with DVI ports hangs OVER the table edge.

Otherwise, the pressure from screwdriver will flex card, especially as screws get removed.

This is what kills it in first place.

This is especially important after baking and during reassembly.
