Mac Pro Noise and Loud Click/Snap on Wake

Hey all,

Finally got home to use my Mac Pro and I love it. Thought I'd post about my experience thusfar to answer any questions people may have.

As far as noise goes, my room is absolutely silent right now, and I just hear a very low and quiet passing of air noise which is the fans, but its very very quiet. Occasionally I can hear the disk being written to/read from, and sometimes even spinning - thats a pain - but what are you going to do? It's the hard drive. lol

I have a question though - when I wake the machine from sleep, I hear a very loud snap/click noise which I think might be coming from the power supply (haven't tested enough to know for sure). Anyone else that has a Mac Pro or even a PowerMac - could you verify whether you hear something similar on wake from sleep?

Yup... I have one and I get the same thing....

Its not super loud but it SERIOUSLY sounds like someone switching on the lights

It might be the harddrive indexing itself. It should go away after a day?

I'll have to wait as my 3ghz Pro was delayed at the border

Anyone else that has a Mac Pro or even a PowerMac - could you verify whether you hear something similar on wake from sleep?

My Quad does the same thing, I have always assumed it is the PS.

When I went home today for lunch, i woke up my Mac Pro... the click wasn't as loud, but was still there. Could it possibly be the hard drive heads moving out from park and the disks spinning up?

I would assume it would be the hard drive activating as well. Every brand/model sounds a little different... the IBM TravelStar in my PB makes a noticeable whiiiiiiiiirCLICK when I wake the machine.

I think my click is a bit quieter possibly because I moved the 250gb WD drive that came from apple into bay 2, and put a 300gb Seagate into bay 1... perhaps the seagate is just quieter?

Has anyone checked the speakers? I once had a PC that upon waking, the sound card was rather noisy, and would emit a noticable 'pop' to the speakers. If I unplugged the speakers before waking it up, it was dead silent.

Of course, with Macs having internal speakers, it would be harder to test. (Maybe hook up external speakers so the internal is off, then turn off the external?)

The power supply on my first-gen G5 has a fairly noisy relay of some sort in it, and I expect what you're hearing is the same. I'm not sure what it's turning off on sleep, but the neat part about it is that it more or less kills all power when the computer is off--most draw a few watts, while at least the early G5s are functionally zero when powered down.

It's nothing to worry about once you get used to it--I always sort of enjoyed it as part of the "Rev up" sound you get form the fans spinning up. Speakiing of which, do they still do that on the Mac Pros?

The speaker theory is also woth at least looking into, though I assume you'd noticie if that's it--my speakers can make a very loud pop when they "wake up".
