I have a 2009 mac pro a1289 and I flashed the firmware to the 2010 mac pro so I could get the six cores processors to work on them. In the system identifier the mac came up as a 5,1 so I think the firmware hack worked. After I swapped the CPUs in and tightened them to about 5 turns the computer just turns on and sits there. There are no red lights and the power led is solid but the computer wont chime and start up. Is there anything I can try to make the mac boot?

Dual 2009 tray
[doublepost=1487866671][/doublepost]I ordered a pair of xeons x5670s that are matching are there different kinds of x5670s?

80% you didn't get the heatsink "into position" yet, either too tight or too loose.

20% you damaged the socket.

Do you know, that 4.1 dual tray use "delidded" cpu?

Since he mentioned "5 turns", I think he did the study.

Yes I do I used washers to raise the heatsinks up 2mm.

The weird part is I put the old cpus back in the pins on the processor tray were fine and when I out the old backs in the boots without a issue. I got the new 5mm replacement thermal pads and about 2mm in washers. So I dont think the processors are damaged. I was reading about how you need special kinds of processors would any xeons x5670 work?

For dual processor 4,1. It's highly recommended only install CPU A first. And then do the boot test. Only continue install CPU B when the machine can boot with just CPU A installed. Otherwise, you don't even know which heatsink need to be adjusted.

Wil the computer boot with only cpu A in it with a dual processor tray?

I had one other question I was testing my ram with 1333hz and it would only appear as 1066 ram is. Do you need to install westmere cpus before you can get the ram speed to appear as 1333 in osx? I also reset the pram when I inserted the faster ram.

The RAM can only run at 1333MHz with supported CPU.

Hello
Same problem for me, my 4.1 upgraded into 5.1 won't boot with my new 5680 processors (dual CPU)
I have tried with only one, without success
I have delidded processors with caution, everything seems ok.
There is no redlight on CPU tray, but when I push DIAG LED button, "GPU OK" led is blinking
I have no GPU issue because it works with my original CPU

Any idea ?

Regards

Hi,
I re-pasted the processors, but then only one processor appears in the system information and only half of the Ram modules are visible. Processor B does not work, but the system is working. What could be the problem?
Thank!

Thank!

1) CPU B not properly seated.
2) CPU B is damaged.
3) Socket B is damaged.
4) Heatsink B is not properly installed.

Try re-adjust the heatsink B screws first.

I had the same problem after dual CPU upgrade to a Mac Pro (late 2009). Installed everything and turned on, followed by....nothing! No chime, anything.
I took out the tray again and slowly loosened all the screws (I had previously screwed them in until I felt resistance, so they were pretty tight). Probably loosened a half to three quarters turn, then I jiggled the heatsinks a little, just giving a gentle rocking in case something wasn't seated perfectly. I was fully prepared to take the whole thing apart again ( and was hoping my delidding wasn't the source of the problem...!) but when I started it again after loosening the screws it started up perfectly and I'm happily using my 2 x 3.46 quad core Xenons and all is good!!

I've had a similar problem with my 4,1 and I was frustrated. First of off, my new 3.46ghz delided cpus did not work and someone recommended I remove the plastic cpu pads and not have them all together so I did to do that just that however my Mac wouldn't chime on several attempts. I thought I did something wrong and decided put back my older cpus @ 2.66Ghz that too failed to chime, I noticed I had black dust around the strip of chips and I decided to clean all of it off with Isopropyl Rubbing alcohol and now put the original cpu pads back and voila It chimed! I thought I had broke my 12 Core Mac Pro.

Does anyone know, do I need to Convert my 4,1 to 5,1 before upgrading my 3.46Ghz De lided cpus from 2.66Ghz?

Yes it's a requirement and you won't run without a MP51.00xx.Bxx or 1xx.0.0.0.0 series firmware.

The original MP41.0081.Bxx that is factory installed to the early-2009 Mac Pros is not compatible with Westmere Xeons, just with the Nehalem ones.
