Mac Pro Ordered :D

Ordered this to replace a Late-2012 Mac mini server that had a SSD inside the thing so we had to use a 6TB thunderbolt drive to store everything on for a computer lab. That and the mini was controlling quite a bit of services itself. Open Directory, Profile Manager, DNS, NetBoot (with DeployStudio), and so much more. The MP is well welcomed!

Had to order it before the trashcans replaced these. Still really wish apple sold the Xserve!

Congrats on your new machine. I am sure that machine will give you many years of service. My colleague has a similar Mac Pro and he's happy with it.
 
Good show I am sure you will love it.

And as for the internal drives - if i could afford to i would have gone with the apple as its simpler to have the covered under applecare.

That machine should do you well for many years to come.

Why most drive are covered better by the original manufacturer than Apple Car.

For the sake of simplicity. Its all about personal choice tho. While i have never purchased drives through apple; thats been because of the price. If i could afford it then i most likely would have. Means the machine in its entirety would be covered in the simplest way.

Sending drives off to manufacturers aren't always as trouble free as one would like. (And yes i have had experience with all the major drive suppliers) When I've had a drive fail, it would have been great to go swap it out with apple rather than wait weeks for a WD replacement for example.

I think my point is I don't understand why people have to make negative statements about someones purchase choice. I see this often on apple forums and i truly don't get it.
 
Gavin seems to have ordered this for his work place. In such cases, it is often much more practical to use your budget on a single order and not have to deal with several orders through the procurement system.

Sometimes, you are also kindly asked to spend the budget that was estimated at the beginning of the year no matter what, in which case buying Apple's disks may help ;)
 
Congrats!

I just got a new MacPro myself from my company. Love the simplicity and ease of upgrades - installing extra RAM is a snap! Still has that new computer smell!
 
Very nice. You must come back and let us know once you've had a chance to set it up. I am curious to know how the performance will be for your needs.

And I agree, I wish the Xserves still were around :( finding the 2009 Xserve is hard!
 
Seems like you would be the perfect use case for the Mac Pro trash can. You already have a Thunderbolt external, couldn't you just use that with the new Mac Pro? Or do you need more storage?

It is just way too slow doing that. We would have 30 people sign in and some days it would take several minutes just to sign in. The other reason for the internal hard drives having 2x1TB and 2x2TB would be RAID1 (although I wish I could use something faster, owell) just for safe redundancy.

Right with you on that one. A rack mount server fits so much better in a rack mount than a super wide Mac Pro on it's side!

Correct! We would like to keep it all tied to Apple and not have to deal with WD or Seagate on waiting for replacements. And, we already spent $3,500 on this thing and it is just so much easier to "tie it all in."

Erm. External Thunderbolt drives are the better option.

Even with Xserves we always used external drives for this sort of thing. An external drive in a RAID configuration is going to be much faster than whatever you're doing internally. I don't think the Mac Pro can even fit enough drives internally to give good performance.
 
If I were building a OS X server for business.... I would (depending on requirements and that's a big open depends).

Get a MacPro.

Add 2 Fibre Cards or 10g cards.

Assign space from EMC, Netapp, Whatever SAN provider you choose.

Call it a day! :)

But in reality I would just create an OSX server in our ESXi environment but that's another story.

Tongue in cheek :) I'm pretty sure my work/enterprise environment is much larger then what would have ever justified putting a Mac Mini in the datacenter in the first place.

I really do miss the xServer. It was the wrong time for Apple for the xServer. I wonder what Apple has loaded its' data centers with for serving up SIRI, the Apple Website, etc.

True. You can get a "free" 1-5 year warranty with aftermarket hard drives where you just pay $5 shipping and they send you a new one. You can even hold on to your dying drive to transfer the files over to the replacement before sending back the RMA.

Better drives (usually), longer warrantee, better price, and easier RMA. Why oh why would you buy Apple.

Ouchkibibble!, there should be a sticky posted saying never to to do apple upgrades that are easily user upgradable. well not really but you know what im saying that people should be informed before buying.
 
Jeez Guys - It's done, decision made. Maybe not the best decision, but it's done. I think the POINT has been made:eek: Let's move on - huh!

My 2010 3.2 quad is a fine machine, especially using mechanical hard drives. I have a Mountain Lion boot drive, a Windows 8 boot drive, a Blu-ray burner and three 4TB WD RE drives stuck in the same case. That configuration works very well for me.

Also it was smart to get AppleCare. Six months ago Apple replaced the $400 5870 GPU due to a noisy fan. I saved a couple hundred dollars with AppleCare.

I sold my powermac (still under Applecare) to someone and 2 weeks after they bought it, they plugged in a firewire device which fried the motherboard. Apple replaced it with a Mac Pro!
