Ok, so i bought a mac pro with 1gb (2x512) now, I would eventually like to upgrade to more and was wondering if I buy say 2gb (2x1gb) would It matter if i put it on the top riser or bottom since they are different sizes....Would it be better to buy 2x512 and have that on the top and bottom and then buy larger ram sticks for the rest of the slots....? Anyone know? Or does it not matter mixing in different sizes of ram sticks?

If you want maximum performance, ONLY use 4 of the 8 slots total.

I believe that with each FB-DIMM you add, you reduce the latency or access time by 5-10 ns with EACH ADDITIONAL DIMM.

Plus, using 4 slots gives you the max 256-Bit lane throughput.

ok so if i have one gig on the top riser (2x512), it would be ok for me to install (2x1GB) or even (2x2gb) on the bottom riser?

I know it shouldnt matter just want to be sure...

I am thinking all 4 have to be the same type for max performance.

Thats what I was thinking....so I guess when I do decide to upgrade im gonna go with doing 2x2GB on both up and lower riser and then throw in my original 2x512 into the bottom riser...total of 9GB
