MP 6,1 Mac Pro random kernel panics, even when I restart normally.

Every time I reboot my Mac Pro it says it was shut down due to an error. Sometimes the computer will full out kernel panic out of nowhere, I have no idea what the issue could be or where to start troubleshooting. I've ran the diagnostic tool (holding d during boot) and it said no issues were found.

Install DriveDX and check if your Aura Pro X is healthy.

I'm hesitant to put the OEM SSD back in since this is the drive with all my apps for work, I'd have to clone it over first somehow.

You have to install your Apple OEM SSD back, it's NVMe related KPs, so, it's caused by the Aura PRO SSD.

Btw, I'd install the original SSD back, erase the original SSD and do a brand new install to check if anything happens again. Only after being sure that your Mac Pro is not having any hardware problems with the original SSD, I'd restore the cloned backup. With this type of storage related KPs it's common to have data corruption, do the initial diagnose with a clean install.

Note, your Mac Pro KP from the first post happened after 26 and something hours.

Yes, clean install.

You can get up to 2TB (models are 2TB, 1TB, 512GB, 256GB). 2TB is the new Apple SSPOLARIS, but it's a US$ 900+ drive. There are some sellers on eBay that have MP6,1 compatible drives brand new.

I don't think you need to necessarily worry about an OEM drive. Main thing is to test w/ *your* OEM SSD to help isolate the crashing behavior. Not sure why, but for some reason, it seems the Aura Pro X is either incompatible or malfunctioning. You should be able to use a whole bunch of different NVMe drives in place of the OEM drive now. And as Alex hinted, it's a far better value to go with one of those than OEM.

I encountered the exact same issue and wasted way too much time on it. In my case it was 100% OWC's fault. I ended up using external SSD storage. Performance is at least as good as the factory SSD (WD Black one or two generations ago).

I have an external 4 bay 40tb raid I use for work, the ssd is just for apps and OS. I'm sure I could clean it up to have everything fit nicely on the 256, but these days programs are so big.

I think when I'm in between projects I'll swap in the apple SSD and start fresh. It's a shame the OWC one is known to have so many problems.

Multiple other sites report on this same crash after any third-party SSD installation.

The solution appears to be:

1. In System Preferences > Energy Settings (or Battery, then "Power Adapter" tab), disable "Put hard disks to sleep when possible"
2. If that doesn't work (it appears to work for everyone who has tried it, but OWC has offered a more drastic fix, so YMMV): in terminal enter

   sudo pmset -a standby 0
