MP 1,1-5,1 Mac Pro reboot instead of shutdown

Hi,

I have an odd problem since several weeks now and need some help.
My Mac Pro 4.1->5.1 running Catalina 10.15.6 and OpenCore 0.6.0 is sometimes rebooting when I choose to shutdown. It completes the shutdown procedure and then immediately boots up again. I don't know why this is but when I then log in again and select shutdown, it always works and shuts down properly. But now I always have to shutdown twice before it works..

At the same time this issue came up on my machine, sleep did not work reliably anymore. Most of the time, it goes to sleep, but right before the fans stop spinning (after about 1 blinking of the power button), the power button white light is on again and the computer does not sleep (the screen is black though).

This was working very well before. Not 100% sure, but I believe all this started around the time when I installed 10.15.5. Any ideas how I could debug this?

Few things you can try.

1) e.g. turn this off

2) SMC reset

3) NVRAM reset

4) change the logic board battery

5) try if a clean installed OS also do the same thing

I already tried 1-3 with no success. Will try battery replacement next.

You may also try if the following command can shutdown the cMP (without reboot)

sudo shutdown -h now

Replacing the logic board battery did not help, unfotunately.

And using the shutdown command on the command line also just made it shutdown and then immediately boot-up again.

If you disconnect all USB equipment, remove all PCIe cards (except GPU), and try a clean macOS (e.g. use your spare drive), but still nil help. Then I will suspect either the PSU is failing, or the logic board is failing.

Thanks, was not able to do that huge test so far. But I have the feeling that it does not occur as long as I do not use my VirtualBox Ubuntu 20.04 Server VM that I sometimes use for compiling Linux binaries. However, I also can't reproduce by just starting the VM and working with it for a few minutes. Maybe this only occurs if the VM runs for some time?

10.15.6 has compatibility issue with VirtualBox. This is a known issue. And should be fixed by the supplemental update that just released.

I already had the issue with 10.15.5 (hoped the update to 10.15.6 would fix it but it didn't). Was the VirtualBox issue already present with versions < 10.15.6?

did u install usb3.0 (PCie) in ur mac ?

I'm having the exact same problem but the only difference is that I just installed a WiFi/Bluetooth upgrade (second Mac I've done this on).

I’m running both Mojave and High Sierra. Only RX580 and PCIE NVME installed.

Everything was running fine and then when I went to shut down, it keeps rebooting. I've tried literally taking out/replacing everything (wifi card, disconnect bluetooth, swapped GPU and hard drive) and swapped for others (I have another Mac Pro running High Sierra that I quickly tested the SSD from and the issue persisted, even after PRAM reset).

I thought it was a glitch when the Mac went into sleep mode but now I'm not so sure.

I figured it out. The WiFi card adapter was the cause of the issue. Once removed the rebooting stopped. I knew it wasn’t any of the pcie devices as I had already removed or swapped them all. Thanks for the idea!
