Mac Pro Retina iMac (non professional)

I am a consumer and not a professional therefore I will be buying the computer because I ENJOY it

Being used to a Retina MBP, after spending some hours in the Apple Store I find it hard to ENJOY the iMac display

I think a new Mac Pro + a cheap 4k display will be the next best thing to a retina iMac

Do you think this spec is a good alternative for me:

Quad core
16GB
D700

Versus a max spec iMac

If a retina iMac is released next year (after that i can understand) do you think will this Mac Pro surpass it

Also is a "4k" display like a retina display? like do the pixels double up?or does it just give more real estate?

Which iMac did you have and how close did you sit to it? Mathematically speaking, the 27" QHD is nearly the exact same *effective* DPI as the rMBP if you sit twice as far away from the screen. In that sense, it is already "retina" and shouldn't look any different.

The 4K is display Apple sells is a Sharp. Most vendors so far sell a 32" like that one at 4K, which is 2x 1080p in every direction. You get more screen real estate and can use it at its native res, unless you choose to scale it to some other resolution.

What are you using it for that you want the D700s. They are overkill for almost anything except heavy video post production.

I agree that the iMac looks like *****. I sit about the same distance from my 15"rMBP as I do from my 27" 2010 iMac. I can't even look at the iMac. I also need a 4K display and I think will look into the new Dells.

i would like to game in 4k resolution

there are some 4k displays for under $500 if you are interested, i don't know how good they are

I've looked at getting the 39" but it only can go to 30Hz. That may be okay for my photography but not for much else and even moving mouse fast and dragging windows would show some stutter.

the future Dell 24" 4k monitor for $1400 (probably $2500 in the uk -.-) looks interesting too

That is the one I"m considering also but I'll wait till CES in January as probably there will be a lot of competition and maybe even lower prices from that competition.

maybe there would be money in setting up a permanent address over there and letting people use it to buy apple products to ship to the uk
