Hi,

I have a 1st Gen Dual 3.0GHz Mac Pro that keeps restarting itself.

It started off that it would boot up into OSX and at a random time it would reboot, whether it was being used or just idle.

Now it has got to the point that it will restart just after the chimes of just after the OS has loaded.

I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC and have removed all the unnecessary components and used minimum ram.

Also whilst it was booting into the OSX I installed a temperature monitor that reported no problems with the temperatures.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I know it is a geriatric machine , I just wanted to get a little more life from it :)

Thanks.

I have cleaned out all dust so i guess i will be trying a new psu!

Thanks for the replies :)

My 3,1 restarted randomly (hardware restart) when the video card started going bad. Within two months of the beginning of the random restarts I started getting video artifacts. I replaced the graphics card and since then no random restarts no random disk activity and no artifacts.

You will see many here with similar sequence of events.

Otherwise look at PSU then motherboard. Also look for fault lights on the RAM carriers. Bad RAM has also been known to cause strange things like hardware restarts.
