if you are thinking of buying a mac pro for video type work, go get it right now. read on....

Well, i finally bought my mac pro 2.66 last week.
i was impressed seeing it sit beside its cousin, the G5.
I was further impressed by how incredibly easy it was to add the extra 2 GB RAM and 3 internal HDs.

But the real test I knew, would come this weekend. I have a medium sized video transfer to be done....about 14 hours worth. On my sweetheart G5, it would have taken a much longer time to process the mpeg2s in bitvice (mpeg2 compression software (http://www.innobits.se). no, i'm not paid by them, but it's amazing software and peeps should know about it. far better than compressor for mpeg2s imho.

So i edited, output the fcp ref files; set up my droplets for BV and the batch feature.

In all, the last mpeg2 is just about done. I started this morning at 12:49 AM, encoding a total of 10 files..ranging in duration from 3 minutes to 2 hours and 3 minutes.

In all, the MacPro ran 3 files at once, using rosetta (rumour has a universal product in the making). i found a small speed loss with 3 files, but when it ran at 2 files, it was right back to normal. My G5 can only run 1 file at full speed and 2 files slows it down.

I don't have scientific type numbers, but man oh man, i just saved myself a TON of time. This means the project will be done faster b/c all my DVD SP template files are waiting for the mpeg2s.

SO, I can bill faster and start another project much faster = wuhoo!

btw, for anyone taking aiffs and compressing into ac3 (2.0) files, my G5 (which has 3.5 GBs Ram), usually takes b/n 14 and 22 minutes to process a single duration of 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours.

I ran compressor with all, but 1 2 hour file.

It finished it in...get this.....20 minutes. ALL OF THEM. Another massive huge time saver.

Oh and for those of you using DVD SP, when you drop an mpeg2 into your assets, it takes some time to 'parse' the asset - ya....not a problem in the MPro. I can't believe how fast it chugs through them.

WUHOO! :)
