Mac Pro Start Up issues

I am having issues starting up my Mac Pro. It's a 2009. Went to start it up, and this comes up.

I have tried to boot it into safe mode, it gets towards the end of loading and then fails. I wonder if its the GPU that has failed.

Any suggestions would help.





 
From the artifacts I see, seems like it. If you have another GPU to test, swap them, boot and check the error logs.

Unfortunately I don't have another GPU, it's an 8000GT and I was planning to upgrade it anyway, so I may as well do that, see how it goes.
*** I got it to boot up, and this comes up, I would think it is the GPU?

If my GPU is gone, what would you all recommend as a reasonably priced GPU? I notice most new cards require a 6 to 8 pin cable.
 
Well it looks like I dont have to replaced it. Did the old power cord out, hold power button for 30 seconds, plugged it back in, turned on and all good. But I still want to upgrade the GPU
 
From the use you do, I suggest either an ATI 5770 1GB memory (AMD 5770 now) or an AMD 7950 3GB memory, that in case of future upgrades to 4K (Retina like) monitor/interface.

Both can do games, the 7950 as more recent than 5770 can play recent titles at good fps and higher resolutions.

For both cards, you can select the cheap solution which is to buy the PC version of the card and flash it yourself. If you live in US, you can go to MacVidCards.com and see pricing for flashing or buying a card like this or nVidia solutions.
I suggested AMD cause I use it, I don't know much about nVidia's line.

Agree that a dual 6pin reference 7950 is a good option, and it support Metal (even though we have no idea how Apple going to use it). I got a new card few months ago for about $150, if you don't mind to get a used card, it will even cheaper. However, since you have no idea how the last user stress the card (e.g. serious OC without proper cooling, or Bit coin mining 24/7, etc). I prefer to go for a new card.
 
Thanks all, they are selling the AMD Radeon HD 6870 on ebay for a good price. Would this also be a good card? Or even a Nvidia GTX 285

Well I decided to go out and buy a new graphics card, and ended up with an ASUS 960GTX, got it at a good price, works great.
