mac pro startup time query ?

So I've had my mac pro since wednesday and I'm loving it. It's a great machine and feels alot faster than my G5 powermac it replaced, but....

when it startsup, it seems to take longer for the apple logo and then boot into OS X than either 2 of our macbooks, or imac core duo... it's really strange. Heck even the mac mini G4 & ibook G4 would give it a run for it's money.

This starts in about 45 seconds, they startup in about 20-25.

Just wondering if this is normal. It's not a major issue just strange.

I am assuming you mean shorter?

I will report back when my Mac isn't on the fritz.

mine is also about 45 seconds. and it doesnt seem to run programs as fast as before...

Hm, mine takes around 10 seconds from a cold start.

My Mac Pro starts up in 25 seconds, give or take a couple seconds. Have the base model with a gig of RAM. I thought it was faster (although 25 seconds is fast, I understand), and maybe it has been - I think it has started between 15 and 20 seconds before.

I hear that the more RAM you have, the longer start up and shut downs can take.

Boot Camp takes about 70 seconds before the desktop is up and I can actually use the computer. When I actually timed it, I was really surprised. I thought it was 30 seconds max... it might fluctuate though.

Were both in the same boat. Maybe if I swapped my ram around ?

I have 2x 512mb on first riser board and 2 x 1gb on lower riser board...

And if that doesnt work it's back to re-install mac-osx


EDIT: well its not memory. Its seems like my mac pro is always waiting for the HDD to catch up, so maybe that's where the issue lies. I'll copy the entire contents of drive 1 to drive 2 and boot that and see if it solves it.

Latest Edit : So instead of re-installing I started up using the disk and ran disk utility. I repaired disk, even though it said it had no errors, and then I checked startup disc and re-pointed to OS X (it was already there but who knows with these irratic errors) and rebooted. To my delight, problem solved. 15 seconds from chime to everything on my desktop. I noticed spolitlight re-indexing, so maybe a table of contents or some such was fecked.
