In addition to the 8TB of storage that you can configure the Mac Pro with, does anyone know the total SSD storage capacity that it can have through expansion slots, etc?

I've heard as high as 40TB, but wanted to get other folks to chime in.

Kinda depends how you configure it. I guess you could put 2 Pegasus R4i’s in it if you really wanted, use a 3rd party GPU in a different slot, then add a J2i plus another 8TB to that if you wanted to be “symmetrical”. That’d give you 8TB + 32TB + 32TB + 16TB = 88TB. But then you could also swap out all of the 8TB disks for 16TB disks instead, which would give you 168TB total. I’m sure I’ve missed something, but you could at least do that.

Dammit, I missed the *SSD* qualifier when responding!

So, total SSD would be, what, 16TB (4 x 4TB) per 4-socket NVMe host card, and so you’d just put as many of those as you had slots available for, I reckon...

Well, there are six slot-host cards, Sabrent have just launched an 8TB drive: that's 48TB, if the two work together and in a 7,1…with five free slots (assuming you have a two slot MPX module plus the I/O card, nothing else), I make that 240TB unformatted capacity. And you could still use Sonnet's J3i adaptor for three more SATA SSDs.

I appreciate the response. I saw that OWC came out with 16TB cards (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDACL4M216T/), so I would curious what the potential was.
