Mac Pro upgrade?

Hey folks,

I'm currently working on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 16GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. I've recently been doing tons of video projects and have found that the times needed for rendering and generally working in AE is making deadlines difficult to meet. I'm very tempted to upgrade to a Mac Pro setup and was hoping people may be able to give some advice. Pretty much all the work I do is in Premiere and After Effects.

I've been looking at the 6-core, with the idea of upgrading RAM to 64GB, or alternatively investing in the 8-core (although I'd probably not have funds to max out the RAM). Would I see a marked improvement over my current setup with either of these options? Also, what do people think is the best way forward for me?

The improvement in performance will be enormous. Night and day. I personally think the 6 Core is the sweet spot as it gives excellent single threaded performance and plenty of multithreaded performance. More cores will equal faster performance for multithreaded apps, but I don't know enough yet about Premiere and AE to suggest which one to go for, or if RAM will be more important.

Either way you'll see a massive improvement, and if I had to guess, I'd say go for the 6 Core with maxed out RAM.

To be honest a current Gen Imac will be a huge jump as well. Depends on how deep your pockets are.

Do some research if a MacPro will actually be that much faster for AE, I have never used the program so cannot comment. I have seen many comparisons where the Mac pro has not been that much faster than a Imac, depending on the task that is.

I'm assuming you mean than the current gen iMac? The nMP would obviously be much faster than his old iMac. Either one will be a huge upgrade from his old iMac.

Main reason to go with Mac Pro over iMac - thermal throttling. The Retina iMac is real bad with this, the GPU and CPU underclocking themselves like crazy to keep the temps down. No issues there with the Mac Pro.

Then there's noise (or lack there of) and expandability that you get the nMP vs. the iMac.
